Eight years after the founding of what was to later become the Faculty Women's Club of the University of California at Santa Barbara, the first Sections Program was started. Throughout the years, the active sections have varied with the changing interests of the membership. Sections meet independently from general membership events, and meeting times and places are determined by the individual section members. A brief description of current sections follows. New sections can always be formed by a core group of the membership. For all inquiries and ideas for new sections, send an email to FWC email, with "Sections Chair" in the subject line.
Conversational English started out as a section in the FWC more than 30 years ago. Although it is no longer run under the auspices of FWC, you can learn more about it and see pictures of some of the FWC/Conversational English activities on the Recent History page.
Book Discussion meets once a month to discuss a book which is chosen by group consensus. The time, place and week-day evening is decided by the group. Come and share the pleasure or displeasure about each chosen book you have read. This section is not for English majors only, but we will accept them nevertheless.
Book Exchange does not have an organizational meeting. It is organized by phone and e-mail by the chair. New members are only added in the Fall at the opening luncheon. Members choose the book they would like to buy and circulate among the members. The chair creates a circulation list and a schedule. At the end of the year, each member's book is returned to them. It is fun to see how diverse the book list can be.
This is one of the oldest, continuing Sections of the UCSB Faculty Women's Club. Bridge meets in members' homes, currently the second Monday of the month. New members are welcome, and new tables can be formed if necessary.
Let's Go to Lunch
This group meets monthly (currently the third Tuesday) for no host luncheons, good conversation, good food and good fun at local restaurants. The chairperson selects the place and time for the first lunch. Members take responsibility for restaurant arrangements on a rotating basis.
Although the name of this group has changed through the years, the purpose and fun has not. Another of the oldest, continuing Sections of the UCSB Faculty Women's Club, this group meets twice monthly for conversation and sharing of needlecraft skills, which can include crewel, needlepoint, knitting, crocheting, or . . . If you would like to learn a stitchery skill, group members are always happy to share their knowledge. Currently, this group meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month.
SKAT (Sharing Knowledge about Antiques Together)
Members of this group take turns hosting monthly meetings in their homes on the first Tuesday. Members or the host decide on a theme for each monthly program. Among the topics included are identifying antiques, determining the value of an antique, where to shop and where to sell.
This monthly section usually meets in the evening in member's homes on the first Monday, and spouses/couples are welcome. Members share slides and information about recent trips.
Walking and Hiking
Members of this group decide on the monthly walks and hikes, level of difficulty, time, day, and frequency at the first meeting of the section in the fall. Some walks can include a docent who provides geological, botanical, or avian information.
Wine and Hors D'Oeuvres
This section provides an enjoyable way to meet UCSB colleagues from various departments and offices. Members meet in private homes, usually twice a quarter. Co-hosts choose the wines and prepare the hors d'oeuvres, while the membership shares the cost. All members are expected to co-host.
